Mark it. Take a little off. Mark it again. That is the whole job, and it is the reason your filling stops feeling like a filling.
Tap the paper. Leave a mark. Check the bite.
What a bite
check is.
A filling can look right and still feel a little high when your teeth meet. Articulating paper helps a dentist see where the teeth make contact.
You bite on the thin strip. Its ink marks the contact points, so the dentist can check a high spot, take a little off, and check the bite again. Try it in the sample chart above.

Instructions from Central Dental’s emergency page ↗
Knocked-out tooth
- Rinse the mouth of blood or debris. Apply a cold cloth or compress to the cheek near the injury.
- Hold the tooth by the crown, not the root. Their page advises trying to place it back in its socket.
- If you cannot put it back, keep it in warm milk, saline, or the patient’s own saliva until you reach the dentist or emergency room.
Broken tooth
- Find the broken piece or pieces.
- Wrap them in a wet cloth and bring them to the dentist or emergency room.
- For a fractured tooth, rinse with warm water and apply a cold pack or compress.
A tooth that persistently throbs and keeps you up at night could be infected. Contact the practice for advice.
